I noticed that you, my readers, love deep thought-provoking journal prompts to help you with your self-development, so I prepared some more.
Personally, journaling helped me:
– gain clarity on what goals I actually want to pursue
– develop an empowering mindset to support me while taking action towards my goals
– find peace instead of reacting to things that won’t even matter a year from now
– focus on the right action steps I need to take instead of trying out everything and wasting my time on things that don’t matter
You can use these journal prompts for extra motivation for the day, goal-setting, designing your dream life, or just to gain clarity around what it is that you want your life to be like.
While you’re thinking about each journal prompt, let go of all the shoulds.
Journal for yourself. What do you want? What is your version of an enjoyable life?
Not knowing what you want is still better than pursuing other people’s unfulfilled desires.
If you’re at the point in your life where you have absolutely no clue as to what’s the direction and purpose of your life, I hope these prompts will at least guide you to your next step.
You don’t have to have it all figured out. Just focus on the next step.
Let go of societal expectations and what you think where you should be by now or what you should want.
Ooh, also, if you’re in your 20s, check out this post on the 20 things every woman in her twenties needs to know. It’s one of my favorite blog posts where I talked a lot about living by other people’s expectations and how to actually live your life by your rules.
Even if you’re in your 30s or 40s, you’ll love that post.
The purpose of these deep thought-provoking journal prompts is to help you dig deeper into your heart and mind and discover the answers that feel authentic to you. No guilt, judgment, or shame.
Let go of everything you think you should be and step into what feels authentic.
You are the only person in charge of your life, so live it authentically and make sure you’re living a life that lights you up.
Let’s dive in!
1. Where do I want to be a year from now?
2. What am I willing to do to get there?
3. What’s the simplest next step I can take to get closer to my goal?
If your goal feels overwhelming, focus on the next step, and then the next step, and then the next.
Don’t put pressure on yourself to do everything at once. Those smallest steps will add up over time so don’t take them for granted. No matter how small they seem at the beginning.
4. How can I make this year better than the last one?
5. How can I make this month better than the last one?
6. How can I make today better than yesterday?
7. If I could achieve only one goal this year, what would it be?
8. What would achieving that goal mean for me?

9. What is my default future if nothing changes? Am I happy with that future?
10. What is the main difference between me now and the version of myself I want to become?
11. If I knew my success was inevitable, how would I show up? How would I show up in my relationships, health, job, career, and family?
Pin for later!
12. What if everything would happen exactly as I desire? How would that feel and look like?
13. Where am I playing small in my life where I know I could be playing big?
14. What is the most expansive belief I can believe now?
15. If I had nothing holding me back, what would I choose? What would I do?
16. If I had all the support I needed, what goal would I pursue?
17. If I knew I could not fail, what dream would I pursue?
18. What actions can I take this week to get closer to living my dream?
Journaling paired with action will make a real difference. If you’re only journaling without taking any action, nothing will change.
19. What do I need to let go of that is holding me back?
20. What do I need to believe to create an unstoppable mindset that will support me on the way to my goal?
21. Am I 100% committed to achieving this goal?
22. What needs to happen in order for me to be 100% committed? (Or, if you’re already at 100%, what has to happen to get to 110%?)

Prompts are a very helpful way to get to action. Journalling also supports you. Both together, the better!

I really liked #13, “Where am I playing small in my life, when I could be playing big?” That’s SUCH an important question–it totally helps you to think of the ways that you can show up bigger for yourself and others. Thanks for sharing these prompts!

I very recently got back into journaling. It was something I loved doing in my younger years but gradually moved away from as life got busier. These prompts will be very helpful in building the habit again. Thanks for sharing!

Great article! Thank you! I love #18 and #21 for me. Easy to get distracted and those two, for me, can make a big difference.
